T20 World Cup: Kishan overcomes personal loss to excel in the summit clash

During the prolonged celebrations at the Narendra Modi Stadium following India’s historic third T20 World Cup triumph on Sunday (March 8, 2026), Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya broke into an impromptu rendition of traditional Gujarati dance. While the two were all smiles, a little over 24 hours earlier they had a far more serious conversation.

During India’s practice session on Saturday (March 7, 2026) evening, Kishan was informed that his cousin and her husband had succumbed to injuries suffered in a road accident in Siliguri on Friday (March 6, 2026). A shaken Kishan briefly contemplated skipping the final against New Zealand and returning home to be with his grieving family.

A conversation with Hardik — who has been like an elder brother to him over the last three years — helped him remain focused on the task at hand.

“I played the match for her. I spoke to Hardik bhai, he told me to put the team ahead. I dedicate this win to her, and today is Women’s Day, so it makes it all the more special,” Kishan said after the final.

Not only did Kishan set aside his personal grief, he also channelled the emotion into a memorable performance on the field. His 25-ball 54 helped India sustain the momentum, while three sharp catches on the boundary ensured New Zealand never found a way back into the contest.

The wicketkeeper-batter had returned to India’s T20I set-up on the cusp of the title defence after a two-year hiatus. By the end of the tournament, he had emerged as the fourth-highest run-scorer, amassing 317 runs at an average of 35.22 and a strike rate of 193.29.

With a campaign like that, questions about a possible return to India’s ODI side were inevitable.

“I have stopped thinking too much. Just do your work and not think about things which are not under your control, and that’s what Virat (Kohli) bhai always did,” Kishan said.
