The T20 format has tilted so heavily in favour of batters that Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming recently suggested the very idea of a “finisher” may be fading, with teams now opting for all-out aggression from ball one. One will find Sunrisers Hyderabad at the genesis of this high-octane approach.
After a tame loss to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in their IPL 2026 opener, Sunrisers — dealing with critical deficiencies in their bowling arsenal — banked on their strongest department: batting.
The emphatic victory over three-time champion Kolkata Knight Riders was built on this ploy, with Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head’s 82-run blitz, Heinrich Klaasen’s vigil in the middle and Nitish Kumar’s late surge pushing the side to 226. A brief three-wicket wobble in the middle did little to dent momentum.
That said, a Pat Cummins-less bowling pool still poses troubling questions. Head coach Daniel Vettori had labelled the outing against RCB as one of the side’s “poorer bowling performances.” The win over KKR would have been soothing, as Sunrisers became the first team to successfully defend a total this season, and on a surface expected to favour batters.
SRH’s opponent for Sunday (March 5, 2026), Lucknow Super Giants, on the other hand, will look to rebound from a disappointing defeat to Delhi Capitals. History will provide comfort for the hurting side. Last season, Mitchell Marsh and Nicholas Pooran chased down 192 with nearly four overs to spare, and overall, LSG holds a 4-2 head-to-head edge over the Hyderabad outfit.
Bowling in the PowerPlay will decide this contest at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.
In 2025, Sunrisers averaged 42.05 with an economy rate of 10.01 in that phase. Early signs suggest little improvement this season, with 149 runs already leaked with the new ball.
LSG, which reduced Capitals to 33 for four in the first six, will hope to replicate the early squeeze to decisively swing the contest in its favour.
