Air India diverts San Francisco-Delhi plane to Mongolia after tech issue, ‘necessary checks’ underway

An Air India flight AI174 en route from San Francisco to Delhi made a “precautionary landing” in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, on Monday after the flight crew detected a potential technical issue mid-air.

After the incident, the airline confirmed on X that flight AI174, operated by a Boeing 777, landed safely and that all passengers and crew were unharmed. “The aircraft is currently undergoing necessary technical checks,” Air India said in a statement.

The flight, which was scheduled to operate from San Francisco to Delhi via Kolkata, diverted to Ulaanbaatar as a precautionary measure after the crew suspected a technical snag.

“We are working closely with our partners to support all passengers while we make efforts to get everyone on their way to the destination at the earliest opportunity. We regret the inconvenience caused to passengers due to the unforeseen situation. At Air India, the safety of passengers and crew remains a top priority,” AI stated on X.

Air India added that arrangements are being made to assist passengers and ensure they reach their destination at the earliest opportunity. The airline did not disclose details regarding the number of passengers on board.

Flight-tracking website Flightradar24 also confirmed the diversion of the San Francisco–Delhi service to Mongolia’s capital, noting the aircraft’s safe arrival.
