CSK confirmed that Brevis’ signing was in complete compliance with IPL rules and regulations.

Chennai Super Kings, in a statement on Saturday, clarified that its signing of Dewald Brevis as an injury replacement for Gurjapneet Singh was in “complete compliance” with IPL rules and regulations.
“Chennai Super Kings categorically clarifies that all actions taken by the franchise during the signing process of Dewald Brevis as a Replacement Player during TATA Indian Premier League 2025 were in complete compliance with the rules and regulations of IPL.”
Recently, confusion emerged after R. Ashwin, on his YouTube channel, said that two or three IPL teams were interested in signing Brevis, but CSK managed to get the South African by being willing to pay more.
“I heard two or three teams were in talks with Brevis. They had to let him go because they were not ready to pay extra money. There would have been discussions with the player agent where he would have agreed to come only if he got a certain amount of money. His concept would have been ‘if I play this season, my value will go up in next year’s auction.’ So he might have told that if you pay extra, I will come, and CSK was willing to do that, which is why he came,” said Ashwin.
Brevis, who had a base price of Rs. 75 lakh, went unsold in the IPL auction held in Jeddah last year. The South African was then signed for Rs. 2.2 crore, the same amount CSK bid for Gurjapneet.
CSK added in its statement: “A replacement player signed pursuant to either paragraph 6.1 or 6.2 can be recruited at a League Fee which shall not be more than the League Fee that would have been payable to the injured/unavailable player for the relevant season.
“If a replacement player is recruited during a season, the League Fee actually paid to him will be reduced to take account of the franchisee’s matches during the relevant season which took place before he was registered and any other relevant deductions under the player contract.”
Brevis scored 225 runs at a strike-rate of 180 in the six matches he played for CSK. The 22-year-old is currently part of the South African team playing in Australia and scored a 41-ball century in the second T20I in Darwin.
